best vacuum for allergies 2016

Vacuum cleaners are extremely useful in our daily battle with dust. A good vacuum cleaner can make this arduous task more bearable. With so many brands and types of vacuum cleaners on the market, how do we know which vacuum cleaner is best for your household? Let us go through the points of consideration before you rush out to the vacuum cleaner store.

How to Choose the Best Vacuum for Allergies: 7 Factors You Should Consider

Upright vs Canister

The choice between an upright or canister vacuum cleaner unit is more than just aesthetics, and the decision boils down to several practical reasons.

A canister vacuum cleaner would be good enough for a small apartment with a few rugs and mostly bare floors. It provides lots of flexibility and you can be easily move around the house to clean some of those hard to reach places. Storing it is easy with its small size.

For a house with wall to wall carpeting, an upright vacuum cleaner unit will make breeze through with its wider cleaning heads together and the brush roll mechanism will quickly churn up the dirt embedded deep in the carpeting.

Bagged vs Bagless

While a bagless vacuum cleaner may have more suction power, the absence of a dirt bag means that you may come into contact with the contents when you're trying to empty it.

In general, bagless vacuum cleaners may not be as allergy friendly and you should be going for bagged vacuum cleaners from this perspective. But if you are not doing the cleaning yourself, you should not hesitate getting a bagged vacuum cleaner that does its job well.

Filtration system

Post motor HEPA filters are pretty much standard these days for allergy-friendly vacuum cleaners. Some units even go as far as ensuring that the entire air flow is sealed, with no dust escaping from its exhaust. Such units tend to be the best vacuum for allergy sufferers. Do remember to clean the washable vacuum cleaner filters to ensure that it is working as intended.

Maneuverability and Ergonomics

A well-designed vacuum cleaner should allow you to maneuver it easily no matter how you steer it, pull it or lift it. Most vacuum cleaners today have heads that allow you to swivel around easily in all directions.

Most vacuum cleaners have handles that fit well in our hands, and some of the higher end units have the controls such as the speed and mode settings right on the handle, thus minimizing the need to bend down. There are also upright units which are able to lie flat so that you can reach underneath certain bed frames and couches.

Noise

This may not be one of the important considerations for allergy-friendly vacuum cleaners, but it would be great if would like to minimize any disturbances to your neighbor or spoil your pet's beauty sleep. Another advantage for bagged vacuum cleaners as per our earlier recommendation would be for its lower noise levels which are inherent of the design.

Motor Power

Just like noise, the amount of motor power is not on top of the list. A higher power does not equate to more effective cleaning.

Edge Cleaning

The ability to clean the edges are particularly important as they probably have pretty high concentrations of dust mites and bacteria. Some of the vacuum cleaners have been designed to be effective in doing this, while others require a purpose-built attachment.

Dyson Ball Allergy: Asthma and Allergy Friendly certified

Dyson Ball Allergy

As with most Dyson vacuum cleaners, the aesthetics are pleasing. Dyson makes no effort to hide its technology but rather showcases it on most of its models.

Even though it stands in at just over 17 lbs, the ball design has made steering so much easier, especially those difficult places where you only need a slight rotation of the wrist to move it into place. This unit comes with the self-adjusting cleaner head which is really useful in maintaining the suction when transiting from hard flooring to carpet or the other way. You do have to take note that the Dyson Ball Allergy does not stand up on its own without clicking it to the right position.

The suction was really strong and it picked up pet fur, dander and little crumbs really well. For some of us, you may feel the resistance when you are trying to push it around when it is turned to full suction. The noise levels were pretty acceptable, or though we cannot be too sure if you would like use it at night if you are staying in an apartment.

The Dyson Ball Allergy is certified asthma and allergy friendly under the certification program administered by Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), in partnership with Allergy Standards Limited (ASL).

What We Liked

  • Very decent suction for most of the indoor cleaning
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Simple and hygienic to empty the bin with a press of a button
  • Includes some accessories like the Reach Under tool and Mattress tools that simplifies cleaning

What We Didn't Like

  • Not the most cost-effective option
  • Setting up may not be straight-forward as instructions provided in manual are not clear especially for the tools

Shark Rotator Professional Lift-Away: Smooth and quiet operator

SHARK Rotator profesional lift-away Hepa 3-in-1 sin bolsa Upright Vacuum – NV500

This versatile unit from Shark is a great performer at its price. It is essentially an upright vacuum with a special canister designed to lift away for easy cleaning around the home.

Given its relatively low levels of noise that it emits, you will be surprised at how well it performs as a hardwood floor vacuum. The motorized brush roll can be turned on for good effect to help remove the embedded particles within the carpet.

Aside from the useful tools that is included in the package such as the crevice tool, there was also smaller tools which you can use for the car or smaller spaces in the room. We were also amused by the fact that there were the onboard LED lights, which actually made cleaning in small and dark spaces easy as we could now see what was going on inside.

What We Liked

  • Great value for money
  • Multiple ways to use
  • Relatively quiet during operation
  • Easy to assemble

What We Didn't Like

  • Not exactly lightweight
  • Manual rewinding of the cord
  • Roller wheels could be of better quality

Miele U1 Dynamic Cat & Dog: Editor's 2nd Choice

Miele U1 Dynamic Cat & Dog

Formerly known as Miele S7260 Cat & Dog, this upright vacuum is a class-leading performer in many aspects thus we rate it our second best vacuum cleaner for allergies. The U1 Dynamic has been designed with user's ergonomics in mind. The handle not only has the on/off switch as well as the carpet floor switch, it is sturdy and nice to hold.

The SwivelNeck technology makes it easy for us to maneuver around the house. It is built such that you can lower the handle almost flat to the floor so that you can reach underneath the  sofa and bed frame to clean these areas. This flat profile of the Miele U1 Dynamic also makes it ideal for storage.

Miele has opted for a bagged system which some of us prefer. The bags are large and have their own filtration system. Despite not being a HEPA filter vacuum, the small particles stay in the bag and any chances of recirculation into the surroundings is minimized.

What We Liked

  • Flat profile to clean hard to reach places
  • Stable body, need not worry of toppling over
  • Four power settings to cater for different surfaces

What We Didn't Like

  • Costly, not for everyone
  • Not stairs-friendly
  • Heavy

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional: Versatile Performer

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional

Just like its sibling in the form of the Shark Rotator, the Shark Navigator has the portable pod which can be lifted away to carry around for ease of use. The Navigator is made of much more lightweight materials than the Rotator.

The most obvious difference is at the handle where the buttons and controls are located on the Rotator. The lack of the digital screen on the Navigator may deprive you the luxury of selecting the type of flooring to be cleaned, but a simple design does the job too.

The other significant difference is the accessories that come with it. The Navigator comes with the standard crevice tool, dusting broom, a power brush for pet fur, microfibre pads and an attachment for hard flooring. The Rotator does have additional tools, but again it is down to your needs.

What We Liked

  • Adequate suction for cleaning
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Simple design, easy to operate

What We Didn't Like

  • Narrower cleaning path
  • Lack of headlights that are found on the Rotator

Electrolux Precision Pet: Good for houses with pets

Electrolux EL8811A Precision Bagless Upright PET

The main selling point for this unit from Electrolux is the brushroll, which is especially useful for picking up pet fur from carpets. Coupled with strong suction, the Electrolux Precision picks up dirt and cleans well across various surfaces in general.

This unit is a looker in all departments and is of a good size in our opinion. The Electrolux is easy to push around the house around furniture with a good range made possible by the long power cord.

What We Liked

  • Powerful suction and BrushRoll Clean Technology makes it a good option for house with pets
  • Dust canister is easy to remove
  • Good size that is easy to move around an apartment.

What We Didn't Like

  • Lack of automatic cord rewinder
  • Too much plastic in the construction for our liking

Dirt Devil Featherlite: Suitable for seniors

Dirt Devil Featherlite

The Dirt Devil Featherlite unit is one affordable unit which you may not want to miss out if you are looking for something with no frills. It is suitable for some light cleaning around the house, but do not expect it to work wonders if you have wall-to-wall carpeting and you should be looking somewhere else.

We love the fact that it was really light and easy to move around, making it a good option for seniors. The attachment hose comes in useful for adjacent areas where you do not want to push it around.

For the amount of work that it is capable of, the Dirt Devil makes too much noise for our liking and while the size is ideal for a small apartment, you are probably going to cause too much disturbance to your neighbours with jet engine levels of noise.

What We Liked

  • Lightweight
  • Great value for money
  • Suitable for seniors

What We Didn't Like

  • Very noisy
  • Cheap looking build

BISSELL CleanView: Bang for Buck

BISSELL CleanView

This unit from BISSELL is one neat package that will not break the bank. While it may not be the most powerful in its class, it has more than adequate suction power and coupled with its OnePass technology, it makes cleaning a breeze.

The clear canister is easy to remove and wash. We liked the fact that the cord length was enough for us to cover a room or two without switching to another power outlet. Given that it would be great if they actually had a retractable cord, we should not forget the inexpensive price point that makes it such an attractive choice.

We did not like the fact that the brush roll cannot be turned off when you are vacuuming bare floors, thus it may be unavoidable that some things do fly out almost immediately after it goes in.

What We Liked

  • Easy to remove and clean canister
  • Bang for buck
  • Adequate cord length

What We Didn't Like

  • Brush roll cannot be turned off, not ideal for bare floors
  • Not suitable for a big house

VonHaus 600W Stick Vacuum Cleaner: Lightweight and nimble

VonHaus 600W 2-in-1 Corded Upright Stick & Handheld Vacuum Cleaner with HEPA Filtration

This VonHaus unit is the lightest vacuum cleaner on our list. The reason we chose to include this was the fact the it has HEPA filtration which is really helpful when it comes to combating allergens in the house.

With its lightweight stick profile, it is easily the best vacuum cleaner for stairs in our list. You can literally carry it around the house to clean not only the stairs, but also the floors and upholstery with absolute ease. The telescopic wand enables the height to be adjusted too.

It can be expected that the VonHaus vacuum cleaner will not be as strong as the other conventional upright vacuum cleaners in the list. However, it does the job well on hard flooring and the size of the dirt cup is pretty decent.

What We Liked

  • Very lightweight and nimble
  • Inexpensive
  • Height adjustable

What We Didn't Like

  • Not as effective as a carpet vacuum
  • Pretty noisy for a small vacuum

Hoover Anniversary WindTunnel: Self-Propelled Unit

Hoover Vacuum Cleaner Anniversary WindTunnel Self Propelled Bagged Corded Upright Vacuum U6485900

This Hoover vacuum unit is self-propelled, and what it means is that you do not need much effort to push it around as it will do so via its own power drive. You only have to guide it and it will go forward or reverse by itself.

The vacuum has three height settings which allows you to switch to an appropriate height for different levels of carpet pile for more effective cleaning.

Another nice feature that it has is its dirt sensor, which detects dirt on the flooring and will turn green once it is clean. The body is not retractable, thus if you need to clean some hard to reach places like under the coffee table or couch, you would have to use the tools that are included.

What We Liked

  • Good value for money
  • Self-propelled, minimal effort during operation
  • Well-designed position for tools

What We Didn't Like

  • Heavy
  • A tad too noisy for our liking

Eureka AS One Pet: Affordable Workhorse

Eureka AS ONE Bagless Upright Vacuum, AS2113A

The Eureka AS One Pet is a lightweight yet robust performer. With a simple design in the form of its AirSpeed technology that maximizes air flow to create an efficient path, it is effective in cleaning up pet fur and picking up the dust from carpets. We are really surprised by its capability for its price point.

We were impressed that there are five height settings to clean different types of carpets. The cleaning path that it offers is very decent at 13 inches.

We like some of the tools that are catered specifically to help you to remove pet hair in the house. The Pet Power Paw is a powered attachment with small rubber nubs that help to pick up the pet hair from carpet and upholstery. There is another nozzle which has a flat profile and is particularly useful for cleaning up the pet hair under your furniture.

What We Liked

  • Very affordable workhorse
  • Designed to remove pet hair effectively
  • Lightweight

What We Didn't Like

  • Looks cheap
  • Noisy

BISSELL PowerGlide Pet Vacuum: Good ergonomics

BISSELL PowerGlide Pet Vacuum 1305 with Pet TurboEraser Tool

Having been on the shelves for a couple of years now, this unit from BISSELL is one of our favorites for handling pet hair. This bagless vacuum cleaner has strong suction and is effective right up to the egdes. This is made possible thanks to its SuctionChannel technology. Did we also mention that we love its 'sporty' good looks?

It is reasonably-sized for an upright vacuum cleaner. Weighing in at just over 16 lbs, it is relatively easy to move around the house. The swivel base and the the ability to transform into a lower profile makes it a joy to clean all types of settings at home. The brush roll can be switched on or off to cater to different types of flooring.

One feature that we would like to highlight is the Pet TurboEraser tool at the side. This tool has built-in rubber brushes which makes it easier to pick up pet fur and dirt.

What We Liked

  • Pet TurboEraser tool is a winner
  • Versatile upright vacuum cleaner with a swivel base to move easily
  • Height adjustable for better individual ergonomics

What We Didn't Like

  • Lack of a retractable cord
  • Lack of floor height adjustments for different carpet settings

Miele Dynamic U1 Jazz: Editor's 1st Choice (Best Vacuum for Allergies and Pet Hair)

Miele Dynamic U1 Jazz Upright Vacuum Cleaner, 41HCE030USA

Another one of Miele's top rated vacuums makes our list in the form of the U1 Jazz. As with all Mieles, they make fine vacuum cleaners with excellent performance but not at mass market prices. In our opinion, German engineering is something worth paying for.

The U1 Jazz has been fitted with an AirClean sealed system which comprises of HEPA filters and filter bags that closes automatically upon removal to ensure that almost all the dirt, dust and allergens remain inside and not recirculated out. This is particularly important for household with family members who have asthma and allergies.

Similarly, the U1 Jazz has a SwivelNeck for enhanced maneuverability around the house. On top of that, it can move into a flat profile position for moving under some furniture. The suction is really good, and it really shines when you are cleaning high pile carpets. The brush roll is spring-loaded for seamless movement between higher carpeting and the floor. For the easier jobs, you can always just lower the power settings via the rotary dial.

What We Liked

  • Minimal leakage of dust back into the air
  • Superior choice for carpeting
  • Nice premium feel to it

What We Didn't Like

  • Mieles are not cheap
  • Bulky and heavy

Editor's Choice: The Miele Dynamic U1 Jazz gets our pick for the Best Uptright Vacuum Cleaner. Its superiority over its competition is evident and is well-suited for all types of cleaning in the house.

Prolux 7000: Strong performer with good sound insulation

Prolux LED Upright Sealed H-Grade HEPA Allergen Pet Vacuum

We have to admit this - we find the Prolux 7000 does look a little dated and old school, but don't be fooled by its looks. The candy red color does appeal to us though, and there's more to it once you start up the vacuum.

If we take the averages of the level of noise among the upright vacuum cleaners on the market today, we would probably rate the Prolux 7000 as quieter than average. Having said that, there is no compromise on the suction strength as it does its primary job well. The extendable main wand and extra extension wand and the long power cord gives this vacuum cleaner a nice range to move around the house.

The Prolux 7000 is also equipped with various attachments for your to do thorough cleaning and are attached at the back of the machine for your convenience.

What We Liked

  • Quieter than average
  • On-board storage for attachments
  • Good reach made possible by the extendable wand

What We Didn't Like

  • Bulky
  • Limited ability to clean under furniture due to its limited recline

Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal Allergy Plus: Big brand performance at big brand price

Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal Allergy Upright Vacuum Plus

The last one on our list is the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal Allergy Plus. The body is designed with the familiar ball which enhances the maneuverability, and the overall outlook is really similar to the Dyson Ball Allergy at the beginning of this list.

The key difference lies in two major areas. The first area is that Dyson have done away with the filters totally. This eliminates the need for filter maintenance and replacements. The next major difference is the inclusion of the Dyson Cinetic which uses many little cyclones instead of one big cyclone for the airflow. By doing so, it has enabled the vacuum to lose little or no suction over a period of time by preventig clogs formed by the microscopic dust.

What We Liked

  • Strong and consistent suction
  • Wide array of attachments
  • Awesome edge cleaning abilities

What We Didn't Like

  • Hard to justify the price
  • The clicks on the pivoting ball takes some getting used to

Miele Complete C3 Marin: Editor's Choice

Miele Complete C3 Marin

The Miele Complete C3 range comes at a hefty price tag, and is definitely targeted at those who are looking for high end vacuums. But does the Complete C3 Marin has what it takes to match its price? Let's find out.

There a few standard features that are shared across the Complete C3 range, like the AirClean sealed system that we have mentioned earlier for the U1 Jazz upright vacuum. The other common features include a stainless stell telescopic wand, automatic cord winding, Dynamic Drive technology which features air-injected wheels on the castors.

The Marin comes with the Electro Premium nozzle which stands out with its LED lights on board, as well as the ability to swivel. The nozzle also comes with an adjustable height feature with 5 settings which are good for even the thicker plush carpets. An interesting point to note is that during the transition from carpet to hard floor, the Marin automatically lowers the suction strength before adjusting it higher once you hit the hard floor.

The Marin comes with six speed settings for different floorings, and the three basic tools are mounted onboard internally for your convenience.

What We Liked

  • High performance canister vacuum
  • Effective filtration, good for allergies
  • High quality premium built that feels like it is made to last

What We Didn't Like

  • Expensive to own and higher than average maintainance costs for filters and bags

Editor's Choice: The Miele Complete C3 Marin gets our pick for the Best Canister Vacuum Cleaner. It may be expensive to own one, but if you have the budget to spare the Marin will not disappoint you.

Dyson DC39 Animal: Easy to lug around the house

Dyson DC39 Animal canister vacuum cleaner

This is another Dyson that makes our list, just in a different canister form. As its name suggests, the DC39 is specialized for cleaning up pet fur and dander. Taking in a large amount of such stuff often causes regular vacuums to lose suction as they may clog up the small holes and restrict air flow. With the cyclone technology, these particles gets moved to where it should be.

For those of you who do not like to operate upright vacuums, the DC39 shines as you do not have to fumble and worry about the vacuum tipping over. You also do not have to bend down with the triggerhead tool at the handle which allows you to switch from carpet to hard flooring with ease.

What We Liked

  • Excellent for families with pets
  • Strong and consistent suction
  • Lightweight and easy to pull around the house

What We Didn't Like

  • Small canister capacity, need to empty it more often
  • Non-adjustable height for carpets

Vapamore MR-500 Vento: Quiet operations

Vapamore MR-500 Vento Canister Vacuum

This unit from Vapamore struck us with more than its bright yellow finishing. We were attracted to its extra large cleaning head that comes with the LED lights which illuminates the dark corners underneath furniture.

The array of attachments that are included makes the Vapamore more than just a vacuum cleaner, as it has the ability to help you out at every corner of the house. We would also like to mention that the noise levels were surprisingly low for the amount of suction that it has to offer.

What We Liked

  • Good suction
  • Quiet vacuum cleaner
  • Many attachments available for different purposes

What We Didn't Like

  • Slightly hard to move on thick rugs

Dirt Devil Featherlite Cyclonic: Neat package

Dirt Devil Featherlite Cyclonic Bagless Canister Vacuum, SD40100

This canister vacuum from Dirt Devil is a departure away from the upright unit earlier on our list. The advanced cyclonic filtration enables that the suction stays consistent as more dust and dirt is picked up. It comes with a washable HEPA filter for easy maintenance.

The dirt cup empties easily with a flick of the switch from the bottom to minimize any stray dust that comes right at you. The relatively small size makes it easy to stow away in your storeroom.

What We Liked

  • Neat performance in a small package
  • Cleans bare floor well
  • Automatic cord rewinder

What We Didn't Like

  • Not great on carpets
  • Short cord length, not for big houses

iRobot Roomba 980: Editor's Choice

iRobot Roomba 980 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

The first in our list of the best Robotic vacuum cleaners is the latest model from iRobot - the Roomba 980. Some of you may not be new to these autonomous vacuum cleaners, and you will surprised that the company has now included app connectivity on both iOS and Android and is also Wi-Fi enabled.

The Roomba has two main rotating brushes and one side brush that spins as it moves along. The dust and dirt is swept into the bin in the centre. Unlike its predecessors, the button interface has been minimized  and now requires you to use your smartphone to set cleaning schedules. It does look really neat, but not everyone in the house can make changes as and when required.

The Roomba moves in a grid-based pattern now thanks to its camera and sensors update. In the past, Roombas typically move around in a seemingly random pattern when they go about detecting where the debris is. The battery can support up to 120 minutes of run time, but we do not see this as a limiting factor unless your house is huge.

One of the features that interest us more than the app connectivity was the Carpet Boost feature. This feature would help detect that it is cleaning on a carpet, and therefore enabled the Roomba 980 to increase its suction power to match up to the different type of flooring.

What We Liked

  • Undoubtedly smart with the amount of technology packed in
  • Carpet Boost automatically increase in suction power on carpets
  • Easy to set up

What We Didn't Like

  • Premium pricing for a robotic vacuum cleaner
  • May not work well in very dim or total darkness as it uses the camera to map out its path

Editor's Choice: The iRobot Roomba 980 gets our pick for the Best Robotic Vacuum Cleaner. It packs in enough technology in one small package to make the cleaning / gagdet geek in you go crazy.

ILIFE V3s: Affordable robotic vacuum cleaner

ILIFE V3s Robotic Vacuum Cleaner with Smart Auto Cleaning Dry Mopping Remote control for Pets Hair

This ILIFE V3s is not only versatile and capable, it is very affordable in its class. It has been marketed as one that is ideal for families with pets at home. Not only does it carry out its primary job of sweeping, it is also able to dry mop floors for extra measure.

The V3s' slim profile enables it to go under difficult to reach places to thoroughly clean. It has also been fitted with a HEPA filter which helps to keep the fine dust particles and allergens at bay. As this is an entry-level unit and cannot be compared with the likes of the Roombas and Neatos, one must manage your expectations but we still love the fact that the ILIFE V3s is a great value proposition.

What We Liked

  • Very affordable robotic vacuum cleaner
  • Does a decent job clearing pet hair
  • Slim and fits under some furniture
  • Quiet vacuum cleaner

What We Didn't Like

  • Does not seem to be able to return to its docking station at times
  • Does not clean up carpets well, good as a supplementary cleaner

Neato XV Signature Pro: Great navigator

Neato Robotics XV Signature Robotic Vacuum

The Neato VX Signature Pro may not be the sexiest robotic vacuum cleaner on the market, but it certainly offers one of the best value propositions. Based on its capabilities and pricing, we would classify this as above average.

The Neato is well-built and its sturdiness can be seen from its construction. The bin is located right at the centre where you can conveniently lift it up to empty it. Controls are simple and intuitive, and you only need to press the power button twice - the first to wake it and the second to set it off to do its job. It will return to its docking station once it's done or when the battery is low while it is cleaning halfway in the house.

Its cleaning prowess is evident, and really shines when it comes to picking up pet hair and dander. The Neato is good over low to medium carpet piles, and performs exceptionally well on hard flooring. There is no doubt about its navigational abilities too as it is equipped with a laser-guided navigation system that has little or no trouble figuring its way around the house.

What We Liked

  • Very competent robotic vacuum cleaner
  • Sturdy construction and able to withstand bumps
  • Effective laser-guided navigation
  • Good suction over different surfaces

What We Didn't Like

  • Inevitable higher levels of noise due to stronger suction
  • Average battery life which limits its working range
  • Bin is small for a good workhorse

bObsweep PetHair: Schedule it your way

bObsweep PetHair Robotic Vacuum Cleaner and Mop

The bObsweep PetHair looks gorgeous with its rouge outlook. Besides looking good on the inside, this unit can not only vacuum and sweep, it can wet-mop simultaneously too.

As with most robotic vacuum cleaners, it can be programmed to run on a daily basis. Not only that, it can run a different programe every day. The best feature about the the bObsweep is that we love the class-leading 1L dust bin that comes in really handy when it is having a busy day. Another interesting feature to note is that they take cleaning rather seriously with a HEPA filtration system, and they go the extra mile by having a UV lamp to sterilize the floor.

What We Liked

  • Multi-role machine that can vacuum, sweep and mop
  • Versatile scheduling
  • 1L dust bin capacity, largest in its class

What We Didn't Like

  • Sensors have some issue detecting dark spots on rugs, need to use stickers to blindfold the sensors
  • Not as quiet as we'd have liked
  • Not great at transitioning from floor to carpet and vice versa

This corded handheld does a good job on cleaning up pet fur from your sofa, stairs and even in the car. The nozzle is made of rubber which is supposedly helpful in attracting the pet fur. The suction power is surprisingly adequate.

What We Liked

  • Powerful suction for a small unit
  • Good cord length
  • Excellent on bare surfaces

What We Didn't Like

  • Rubber nozzle needs some getting used to
  • A little noisy for our liking

Dyson V6 Trigger: Editor's Choice

Dyson V6 Trigger

Formerly known as the DC59 Animal, the Dyson V6 Trigger is priced reasonably considering its other Dyson siblings. This lightweight unit houses a powerful digital motor that can produce an impressive power for short periods of time.

The fact that this unit makes use of a trigger instead of an on/off switch to minimize the wastage of energy and thus preserving battery life.

There is the option of purchasing the accessories which includes an extended floor nozzle that readily clips into position and does floor cleaning well. The performance is as good as those stick vacuums, if not better. We were surprised that its performance was nothing short of respectable, especially on low-medium pile carpets. Having said that, the Dyson V6 Trigger is not the best vacuum cleaner for carpet and cannot be a replacement for your full-sized vacuum, both upright or canister.

What We Liked

  • Respectable performance for a handheld unit
  • Good attempt to improve battery life through the trigger design

What We Didn't Like

  • Bare package, does not come with any of the optional accessories
  • Slightly pricey for a handheld

Editor's Choice: The Dyson V6 Trigger gets our pick for the Best Robotic Vacuum Cleaner. Even though the newer V8 model is in the market, its lacks the HEPA filtration so we still favor one with a track record. The new package also makes it more affordable to own a piece of Dyson hardware now, possibly making it one of the best vacuum for the money.

Dirt Devil Classic: Versatile with accessories

Dirt Devil Classic

The Dirt Devil Classic is designed to be straightforward and fuss-free. The relatively small size and its light weight makes it easy to carry around the house, especially when you are cleaning the stairs or when you are going over the house cleaning both the door and window sills.

The suction is good coming from its small motor, and this works well when you are using the tools that are included in the set. It still does a decent job when you are using the hose. However, we do find it a little too loud as it huffs and puffs on the job.

What We Liked

  • Simple, no frills handheld
  • Bagless and HEPA filtration
  • 5-piece accessories set included

What We Didn't Like

  • Loud noise
  • Filter is not as easy to clean

Shark Pet Perfect II: Powerful cordless

Shark Pet Perfect II

This cordless handheld vacuum from Shark may potentially be a good addition to your home. It comes with a rechargable battery and a charging stand that can be mounted on the wall or placed on the table. The stand also holds the couple of accessories that comes along with it.

For a small rechargable handheld, the power is decent and it comes with a large motorized brush head attachment that makes cleaning the pet fur from upholstery a joy. On top of that, the package includes a crevice tool and a dusting brush for added versatility. Besides using it at home, its portability makes it suitable for cleaning up your car.

What We Liked

  • Powerful 18 volt handheld vacuum
  • Bagless HEPA filter vacuum
  • 5-piece accessories set included

What We Didn't Like

  • Battery life is hardly ideal
  • Cleaning the filters is an arduous task
